ABOUT US

We're are unashamedly a Parish Church, seeking to serve those in Wortley & Farnley to the best of our ability, creating safe spaces for all to meet with God and explore their faith.

Although we can't be 'all things' we can offer different ways of connecting with God

 - whether that's through the dignity of our 9am Sunday Service, the hustle and bustle of the 10:30 Sunday Service, the fun and laughter of Messy Church, or the contemplation of Taize -

we pray that you will find a home that best fits your needs at this time and gives you the means to explore your faith at whatever pace that works best for you.

Our Vision for 2024

Building Faith.

2023 was an incredible year in the Parish of Wortley and Farnley.  A new vicar, growth in the church, increase in resources, repairs to the roof, new faces, a growing impact in the community around us, an exciting new youth group, Christmas Fayres, Summer Fayres, pet services, more interaction with local schools, a deepening faith, and a brighter joy.

Building Faith on Jesus, in others, to do the impossible.

This year, as we capitalise on all the good work of the last few years, I believe that God is calling us to Build Faith in three particular ways.

Firstly, Building faith on Jesus.  Everything we do in church is for and because of Jesus.  Every coffee morning, every toddler group, every Sunday service, every maintenance job, is done in worship of Jesus and to bring him glory.  Our ultimate goal is never a full church, or a successful group, or a beautiful building; our ultimate goal is the glory of God and the worship of Jesus.  We aren’t here to make a name for ourselves, or even St John’s Church.  We’re here to make Jesus famous, and to grow in love for him, to become more like him in discipleship.  This year as we do all that we do, God is calling us to build our faith more and more on Jesus.

Secondly, Building faith in others.  The message of Jesus Christ is life-changing and life-giving, and we cannot help but share this source of love, joy, hope, and peace.  Right at the end of the book of Matthew, Jesus tells his disciples to make disciples of all nations.  We are called to share our faith, so that others might discover the hope and forgiveness of the Gospel and put their faith in Jesus.  This year through our words, actions, and prayers we want to see faith built in those around us.

And finally Building faith to do the impossible.  The church is not the building – the people are - but the building is important as it locates us in a place and gives us a base to do mission from.  Our building is in much need of TLC, repairs, and reordering.  We’re at the beginning of what could be a significant building project costing in the region of £600k to achieve everything we want the building to be able to do.  We have some money in the bank, but nothing anywhere near that amount.  This feels like an impossible amount of money to raise.  But we have a God who raised the dead, walked on water, healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, calmed the storm, set the oppressed free, and rose from the grave.  We have a God of the impossible, and so this year we will ask God for the faith to trust him for impossible things.  We will pray bigger prayers than we have ever prayed, trusting that God hears us when we cry out to him.
